Longhorns Wire will create a draft profile for each former Texas player transitioning to the NFL in 2021.

Each profile will be updated according to where the player is eventually selected in the 2021 NFL draft and/or where they choose to sign as undrafted free agents. Left tackle Samuel Cosmi, one of Texas’ top draft prospects, is up first.

Class: Redshirt junior

Height: 6-7

Weight: 310

Date of Birth: Feb. 16, 1999

Pros

Cosmi is a big-bodied player with a sturdy frame. He’s got long arms and reach, which make him unstoppable when locked up one-on-one with a defender upon the point of attack.

He’s got a very good first step. He seems to be almost linked to the center at times, as his first step in the passing game establishes plenty of depth to catch whoever rushes off the edge. That same first step is used in the running game, especially with zone blocking, and has made him almost unbeatable.

He’s a chef whose specialty is pancakes. When he’s got the defender locked up, his power and length which will lead him to finish blocks; usually on the ground.

Cons

He has the tendency to stand upright in the running game, taking away from some of his power when he does. Especially when facing the smaller, athletic edge rushers who have been able to get under him.

He’s shown dominance against power edge rushers but has shown that more athletic, quicker players have given him the most trouble when they use double moves to get inside of him. His leverage on the inside needs work otherwise teams will simply blitz his inside gap every time at the next level.

Analysis

His positives have really outweighed his negatives. His combination of size and power make him one of the best offensive tackles in this year’s NFL draft. The only downside is how deep the draft is at tackle this year.

Competing alongside other offensive lineman such as Penei Sewell, Christian Darrisaw, Rashawn Slater, Liam Eichenberg, and Alex Leatherwood, he could fall as a result of position depth. However, he should still be selected within the top 50 overall picks.

He may be better fit with an NFL organization that has the intention to start him at right tackle, but he could switch over to left tackle early in his career depending on how well he develops.
