Major North American professional …

Major North American professional sports leagues are talking to health officials and informing teams about the coronavirus outbreak that has led to the first reported death in the U.S. Officials from the NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball say they are all consulting with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other organizations on a regular basis about COVID-19. A man in his 50s died from the virus in Washington, state officials reported Saturday.

The widow of basketball star Kobe …

The widow of basketball star Kobe Bryant is “absolutely devastated” by allegations that deputies shared graphic photos of the helicopter crash scene where Bryant, their 13-year-old daughter and seven others were killed, her lawyer said in a statement Saturday. The Los Angeles Times reported on Thursday that a public safety source with knowledge of the events had seen one of the photos on the phone of another official in a setting that was not related to the investigation of the crash. He said the photos showed the scene and victims’ remains. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the allegations.

Vanessa Bryant’s lawyer, Gary Robb, …

Vanessa Bryant’s lawyer, Gary Robb, said that she went to the sheriff’s office on Jan. 26, the day of the crash, “and requested that the area be designated a no-fly zone and protected from photographers.” “This was of critical importance to her as she desired to protect the dignity of all the victims, and their families. At that time, Sheriff Alex Villanueva assured us all measures would be put in place to protect the families’ privacy, and it is our understanding that he has worked hard to honor those requests,” Robb said.

Lonzo Ball credits health, growing chemistry for recent strong offensive showings

The Pelicans’ recent surge has been powered by an offense focused on sharing the ball, helping it become one of the league’s best.

As the Pelicans have closed in on the Memphis Grizzlies, they’ve done so largely because of an offense that has become more and more deadly. Over the last eight games, the Pelicans rank third in the league in offensive rating as their surge in offense has led them to a 6-2 record in that span.

Before the Pelicans’ game on Friday against the Cavaliers, Lonzo Ball talked about how the team has turned it up a notch offensively of late.

“We finally started playing together – the whole team is pretty much back now. The chemistry is getting better and better every game. Guys know where each other are going to be.

“Find the hot hand, find the open man. Those are two things we have to do. Especially with a lot of guys who are capable of scoring, like we have on our team.”

Starting with the team’s 125-119 win in Chicago, the Pelicans sport an offensive rating of 116.8. That marks rank only behind Dallas (118.8) and Atlanta (117.7). In that same span, the Pelicans are far and away first in the league in assists per game at 34.1 per contest. Second in that span is Miami at 29.6 per game.

The aspect of New Orleans’ offense that makes them so hard to guard is their unselfish nature. Since Williamson’s debut, three Pelicans are averaging at least 17 points per game, five players are averaging double figures and seven players are averaging at least 9.5 points.

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Hokies won’t beat themselves.

They might be offensively challenged when they’re not hitting from the outside, but they’re good at moving the ball around and they lead the nation with the fewest turnovers. Louisville doesn’t come up with takeaways and doesn’t generate enough easy points.

It doesn’t have to hit from three to win, but it’s a whole lot better when it’s hitting from the outside. Virginia Tech’s defense is fantastic at defending the three, and the O leads the ACC in three-pointers.

Why Louisville Will Win

The Cardinals need to gear it back up against after getting rocked at Florida State. That’s what Virginia Tech – loser of eight of its last nine games – is for.

The Hokies aren’t hitting enough from the field when they’re not nailing threes, and they’re not doing anything on the offensive glass to make up for it. They’re not rebounding in general, and that’s a big, big problem against a Louisville team that attacks the boards hard on both ends.

The Cardinals will be +10 in rebounding margin.

They’re also great stuffing mediocre offenses, and that’s Virginia Tech.

What’s Going To Happen

Virginia Tech hasn’t been able to outbomb anyone or be consistent enough to do much of anything on the road. It hasn’t won away from Blacksburg since mid-January, and it’s not going to get enough threes to overcome the problems on the boards.

Amanda Nunes down to defend her UFC featherweight title vs. Felicia Spencer or Megan Anderson

Champ-champ Amanda Nunes was impressed by both potential featherweight challengers coming out of UFC Norfolk.

[autotag]Amanda Nunes[/autotag] is ready for whomever the UFC chooses to put in front of her.

The UFC featherweight and bantamweight champion is down to take on either 145-pound winner from Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 27 event in Norfolk, Va.

Both Felicia Spencer and Megan Anderson picked up impressive first-round stoppages during the evening’s main card. Spencer stopped Zarah Fairn with ground-and-pound, while Anderson put away Norma Dumont with a straight right.

With a thin 145-pound divisional roster, many believe the most impressive winner at UFC on ESPN+ 27 would likely be the front runner for a title shot against Nunes.

[lawrence-related id=495135,495132]

The Brazilian champion took to Twitter on Saturday night to let the MMA world know she’s fine with either challenger.

“I like both winners tonight,” Nunes wrote. “Now it’s up to Dana White. I’m ready for either.”

It’s been rumored that Nunes plans on defending her title at UFC 250 in Sao Paulo, Brazil on May 9. The 31-year-old champ last fought in December, where she successfully defended her bantamweight belt, outpointing Germaine de Randamie in a unanimous decision.

Below is Nunes’ tweet saying she’s down to take on either Spencer or Anderson:

Mychal Mulder providing spark off the bench during Warriors 10-day contract

Mychal Mulder scored 14 points off the bench in Golden State’s comeback road win against the Suns.

Injuries and trades have opened up opportunities in the Golden State Warriors rotation. The Dubs have used the back end of their roster to take flyers with 10-day contracts.

The Warriors have rotated through four different players on 10-day deals with the latest being Mychal Mulder. Golden State plucked the 25-year-old shooting guard from the G League’s Sioux Falls Skyforce, where he averaged 17.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game while shooting 45.1 % from the field and 39.9 % from long distance.

Mulder made his Golden State debut against the Los Angeles Lakers, scoring two points while grabbing four rebounds. Against the Suns, with a limited Golden State bench, Mulder took advantage of his extended playing time.

The Kentucky product scored 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting in 34 minutes off the bench. Mulder was able to knock down three timely shots from beyond the arc while grabbing six rebounds in Golden State’s 18-point comeback victory.

After the win, Steve Kerr credited Mulder as a significant factor in the Warriors’ comeback.

Via Warriors SoundCloud:

I thought Mike Mulder played a big role in that. He came off the bench and missed his first four or five shots and very easily could’ve hung his head. He’s on a 10-day, and things weren’t going his way, but the job he did defensively on Booker and then getting a couple of shots to go late in the first half in the second quarter. I thought Mike really sparked us.

Defensively Mulder was matched with fellow former Kentucky Wildcat Devin Booker. The Suns All-Star scored a modest 21 points on 6-of-16 shooting with six turnovers.

Making a strong impression on the head coach while on a 10-day contract is a positive sign for Mulder’s future in the NBA. The 6-foot3 shooting guard’s performance against the Suns should earn him more playing time in the remaining days on his 10-day deal. Mulder will have four more games through the remainder of his contract with Golden State.

Colorado State Football Schedule 2020 Prediction, Best Case Scenario

7-5: Steve Addazio’s team gets the base fired up with a rivalry win over Colorado to kickoff the era. It splits the road games at Oregon State and Vanderbilt, and then it does on a run with a slew of winnable home games around the road game at UNLV. It gets bowl eligible before a brutal November.

Colorado State Football Schedule 2020 Prediction, Worst Case Scenario

3-9: It’s a true rebuilding year with a rough start and a worse ending. The Rams lose to all three Power Five teams on the slate, struggle in the middle of the slate with a dud of a home loss, and then comes November … uh oh. The Rams aren’t even close in the run of three road games in the last four weeks, and they lose the home finale to Utah State.

Mikey Garcia drops, outpoints Jesse Vargas in welterweight bout

Mikey Garcia finally got a win at welterweight, but questions still abound as to whether he stands a chance against the elite fighters…

Four-weight division titleholder Mikey Garcia may have raised as many questions as answers about his ability to face the top contenders of the welterweight class.

Saturday night at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, Garcia overcame a slow start against Jesse Vargas, before dropping him in the fifth round en route to a 12-round unanimous decision.

The judges’ scorecards read 114-113, 116-111, and 116-111.

This was Garcia’s first outing in the ring since his lopsided points loss last spring to Errol Spence Jr., a native of Dallas who happened to be sitting ringside.

Early on Vargas, the bigger man, outworked Garcia, a natural lightweight, scoring with the jab and straight rights to the body. Vargas also connected on a few hard left hooks that kept Garcia on his toes. Case in point, in Round 4, Vargas managed to briefly stagger Garcia with a hook that landed right on the temple.

“Well, I did have to make adjustments,” Garcia admitted afterward. “I had to get adjusted to (Vargas’) height, his reach, natural size, but as the fight went on I felt like I was hurting him and closing the distance.”

Indeed, the momentum began to shift midway through Round 5, when Garcia started to successfully time Vargas with a series of hare straight rights, one of which caused Vargas to have a bad case of jake leg and retreat to a corner. Garcia followed up with a booming one-two combination right down the middle of the guard that flattened Vargas for the lone knockdown of the fight.

But Vargas, as is his wont, was able to hang on. Moreover, he had a few positive moments that may have won him some of the late rounds.

“He’s a big man. Jesse’s a big man,” Garcia said, “but my talent was able to overcome that.

“I felt that my speed and my power was all perfect and I was able to put it into effect against the bigger guy.”

Still, some of the tops fighters of the welterweight division – Vargas is a fringe contender, at best – may be a bridge too far for Garcia. Looking ahead, Garcia reiterated his desire to face titleholder Manny Pacquiao in the summer. He also floated the idea of facing Spence again.

“I think I have great options,” Garcia said. “I’m ready to get back in the ring with the best. I would love to get a match with Manny Pacquiao or a rematch with Errol Spence. I want to continue campaigning at 147.”

This was Garcia’s fight fight with promoter Eddie Hearn on the DAZN streaming platform. Hearn has said that Saudi Arabia remains deeply interested in staging a potential Pacquiao-Garcia bout.
