Glue guys can be valuable.

It’s always a pleasant surprise when a specialist gets selected in the NFL Draft and, as it happens, this year’s draft class has more than a few intriguing possibilities. One of those is Wyoming’s Cooper Rothe, a former Lou Groza Award finalist who had a career to remember in Laramie.

Strengths

Molchon spent most of his time as a starter at left guard, but he showed a fair bit of versatility by playing four different positions along the line in his tenure on the blue (including six games at right tackle). The Athletic’s Dane Brugler and NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein also give Molchon high marks for his understanding and use of angles as a run blocker, with the latter adding that he “improved [his] base width as a drive blocker” throughout 2019.

Weakness

The versatility is all well and good, but how exactly will that translate to the pros? According to The Athletic’s Dave Southorn, Molchon has taken meetings with teams with an eye toward transitioning to play center… but he never played that position in college and hasn’t had the benefit of the typical pre-draft process this winter. He also has very short arms for an offensive lineman, too, especially among the sample past Combine participants, a concern which is compounded by uneven hand work. A potential result, as Brugler of The Athletic notes, is that he may run into issues with “holding calls [and generating] little push in the run game”.

Draft Prediction

Molchon may not have tools that jump off on film, but three years as an effective starter at a successful program make him a viable role player at the NFL level. Expect him to be a Day Three pick, sometime in rounds six or seven.
