New England dips hand in trade pool

Free agent signings weren’t the only ones taking up these new roster spots on the Patriots over the past few days. In one case, the Patriots traded for a cornerback via the Lions, Michael Jackson. According to Patriots Wire, the Pats swung the deal for a conditional draft pick in 2020.

Jackson entered the NFL in 2019 as a Dallas Cowboys’ fifth-round pick after a successful college career at Miami. He spent some of 2019 on the Cowboys’ practice squad before the Lions signed him to their active roster, where he remained until the Patriots acquired him on Sunday. He played one game for Detroit in 2019. He will join a Patriots cornerback group which includes Stephon Gilmore, Jason McCourty, JC Jackson, Jonathan Jones and Joejuan Williams, among others.

The Patriots have made a few such transactions with the Lions. Their head coach, Matt Patricia, is a former understudy of New England head coach Bill Belichick.
