Year of the Underdog: Undrafted rookies making an impact this season

With most teams having played about a dozen games so far, Rookie Wire took a look at those undrafted players making an early splash.

Matt Thomas, Toronto Raptors

Season Stats: 5.3 points, 1.2 rebounds

The Raptors have done a remarkable job scouting to add contributors around Kyle Lowry, Pascal Siakam, Marc Gasol and others. Of course, the team boasts an undrafted star in Fred VanVleet and also has Chris Boucher and the aforementioned Terence Davis.

Matt Thomas is also in the mix in the North, too.

The former Iowa State guard went undrafted in 2017 and spent two years playing overseas before joining the Raptors over the summer. In four preseason games, Thomas averaged 8.3 points on 46.7% shooting from 3-point range.

Thomas has carved out a role with the Raptors off of the bench in the regular season and is beginning to find his way with the team as of late. A string of injuries to Lowry and Patrick McCaw has opened the door for him and he is averaging 6.2 points over his last five games.

His 56.5% shooting from beyond the arc leads all qualified rookies.
