XFL shuts down entirely after coronavirus crisis canceled inaugural season

Over conference call Friday, the XFL COO Jefferey Pollack, the league announced it has suspended all operations and laid off all players and employees. This means, for all intents and purposes, the XFL is no more.

The league made it just five games before the threat of the coronavirus forced them to suspend the season. Now they’ve shut down the entire league indefinitely.

Who knows if the XFL will make another run at being a viable minor league type of alternative for the NFL. But all money for 2021 season tickets have been refunded, which isn’t a good sign.

For now, it looks like it may have gone the same way as the Alliance of American Football which folded after just eight games last year.

Like the AAF, the XFL had eight teams. Many of the players on those rosters at least made a strong enough impression in their five games of play to get the attention of the NFL and earn contracts. So, it wasn’t entirely for nothing.
