Wisconsin is one of the oldest college football programs of all-time, playing their first game in 1892, but until Barry Alvarez became head coach in 1990 that history didn’t necessarily lead to success.

Specifically, in the program’s 98 years before Alvarez began his tenure the team was in the top 25 post-season rankings only nine times, with their best finish coming in 1962 when the team finished the year ranked No. 2 after falling to USC in the Rose Bowl.

Nevertheless, there are 10 current Power 5 programs to whom the Badgers have never lost. Here are those programs organized by the conference they currently play in, some of which you may not expect.

Virginia (all-time record: 1-0)

Wisconsin’s one matchup against the Virginia came in 2001 when the Badgers defeated the Cavaliers 26-17 at Camp Randall Stadium.

North Carolina (2-0)

The Badgers beat the North Carolina Tar Heels in both 2003 and 2005 when Alvarez and John Bunting respectively were the coaches for the two teams.

Though North Carolina had some great years in the 1970s and 1980s, these two games came when the program was close to the bottom of the ACC and while Alvarez had the Badgers as a consistent top-25 team.

Duke (1-0)

The Blue Devils’ only matchup against the Badgers came in 1995 when Alvarez’s unit won the game 34-20.
