The HBO series “Winning Time,” a fictionalized and dramatized account of the Los Angeles Lakers’ dynastic Showtime teams, drew strong ratings in its first season, although it also attracted mixed reviews.
Some criticized it for deviating too far from what actually happened in the 1980s. In fact, several members of those Lakers teams, including Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, really disliked its content.
Jerry West, who was L.A.’s general manager for most of the era, even threatened to take legal action because, in his view and those of his peers, the series portrayed him as someone who had serious anger management problems.
But others have praised “Winning Time.” Now it has a chance at the highest award a television show can earn.

Season 1 covered only the 1979-80 season, which was the first for Johnson and late owner Dr. Jerry Buss as Lakers. It has left fans of the show eagerly anticipating more.
Luckily, HBO has reportedly green-lighted a second season of “Winning Time.”
