Former University of Tennessee men’s tennis player Tennys Sandgren competed in the first round at Wimbledon on Tuesday.
Sandgren defeated Norbert Gombos, 6:4, 6:7(5), 6:1, 6:3, from court No. 7. The former Vol is ranked No. 68 in the ATP. Gombos is No. 94.
Sandgren turned professional in 2011 and has won 44 matches, while losing 65.
A native of Gallatin, Tennessee, Sandgren played at UT for two seasons from 2010-11.
As a freshman for the Vols, Sandgren went 10-0 in Southeastern Conference singles play as the No. 4 slot in the Vols’ lineup. He helped Tennessee win the SEC regular season title and tournament championship.
As a sophomore in Knoxville, Sandgren went 37-6.
