Will the Broncos trade up in the NFL Draft?

There have been reports that the Broncos plan to trade up in the NFL Draft. Here’s what John Elway had to say about possible trades.

The Denver Broncos are currently scheduled to select 15th overall in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft and wide receiver is arguably the team’s biggest position of need. Jerry Jeudy and CeeDee Lamb are widely considered the top two WRs if this year’s class but they might both be off the board by pick No. 15.

So will the Broncos trade up? Earlier this week, The Gazette‘s Woody Paige tweeted that Denver will trade up to select Jeudy. Last year, Paige predicted before the draft that the Broncos would trade down and select tight end Noah Fant, which is exactly what they did.

So Paige is worth listening to, especially after Elway didn’t rule out possible trades during his pre-draft conference call with reporters on Monday.

“I think we’re preparing ourselves to go in either direction, so kind of depending on how it falls,” Elway said. “We always look at the possibility of going up, and we’ll continue to do that. We’re also looking at going back.

“We can play around with the scenarios going up, but really it becomes dependent on who’s available whether you’re going to go up or if you sit or if you go back. We’re looking at all those combinations.”

If Denver decides that it would be too costly to trade up for a receiver, the team could stay put or even trade down, as Elway mentioned.

Because teams won’t be drafting from their facilities this year with staff all in the same room, Elway thinks there may be fewer trades than usual.

“Obviously, the time constraints — being virtual and not having everybody in the same room makes it more difficult,” Elway said. “That may lead to less trades [but] I still think there are going to be trades.”

Elway will probably be part of several of the trades that do happen.
