Will Cody Latimer play for the Redskins in 2020?

Redskins receiver Cody Latimer was arrested last month, and we are still waiting to see how the team will choose to handle it going forward.

While it seems like there may be a million things in the world that are currently more important than football at the moment, a small question concerning the Washington Redskins has popped up a bit over the last week or two when it comes to a player on their roster.

What is going to happen with Cody Latimer?

If you don’t remember, Latimer was arrested in May and charged on five counts, including Assault in the Second Degree, Menacing, Illegal Discharge of a Firearm, Prohibited Use of a Weapon, and Reckless Endangerment. This allegedly stemmed from a poker game gone wrong, where a police report stated that Latimer became agitated and pulled a gun in a Colorado apartment, firing two rounds in the vicinity of people.

In the aftermath of the arrest, the Redskins made a statement saying that they were aware of the situation, but nothing else has come out since. So what should we expect?

The answer is likely nothing until Latimer has his expected court hearing on July 24. With a make-shift offseason schedule that has already seen OTA’s and minicamps canceled, the rush to take charge of the situation is relatively muted this year, more than it may have been in the past. So while we may expect not to hear anything new for a few weeks, at least, what do we think will happen?

I can’t imagine a world where Latimer is on the team in 2020. With the all-important first year for coach Ron Rivera — one that will be a staple in the culture-building process — there is no need for distractions, especially from a player of Latimer’s caliber. With just six touchdowns and 935 yards in his career (for reference, Terry McLaurin had 7 touchdowns and 919 yards last year alone,) it doesn’t seem worth the risk to keep Latimer around. He would have brought a veteran presence to the locker room, but OC Scott Turner has since said that they aren’t set on bringing in a vet to provide experience; they’re comfortable with molding young talent.

All of this is conjecture, of course, and not reporting based on any facts that we’ve heard. At some point over the next two months, the real news will come out regarding Latimer and his future with the Redskins. Until then, though, it is not a pressing issue for the team.
