Texas A&M subculture, primarily existing through the TexAgs/GigEm247 message boards for Aggie fans and alum to consistently vent and share their thoughts on literally any topic known to humankind, is mostly harmless and entertaining for those of us who earn a living covering the program inside and out.
But as some of you know, every blue-blood program, especially in the SEC, where nearly every fan base is more talkative and opinionated than the next, takes to the message boards during the college football offseason to drop what many would label as “conspiracy theories,” but being that we’re simply talking about a game that children play, anything outside of personal threats is admissible.
For Texas A&M, the Aggies have developed an unwarranted villain-like identity due to the school’s well-known traditions. At the same time, the yell leaders’ recent viral moments from the 2022 season have further pushed that narrative, leading to Texas A&M’s two bitter rivals, Texas and LSU, creating what has to be the weirdest and borderline creepy slang term “aggy” which, as you can see, blatantly lack originality.
First of all, “aggy” is already a slang term for “aggressive” per Gen Z terminology; instead of referring to any expletive-laden message board post to prove my point, it is primarily used in the noun form “aggy doesn’t understand.” “he visited aggy.” etc. Still, let’s be honest; the possibilities are endless when thinking of more ways to tear down Texas A&M when any opportunity presents itself.
Whether it’s former Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger proclaiming, “Were back!” to LSU’s recent win vacancies, the jokes are always there for the taking, but after LSU’s recent College World Series Title, respect is shown, and the jokes take a rest.
Cards on the table, it’s not like the Aggies are without criticism after their 2022 5-7 football season debacle, coupled with their first-round exit in the NCAA Tournament after ending the basketball season with a 15-3 record in the SEC. But still, unless you’re constantly online, which a bulk of Texas A&M’s alum base is not, this is a foreign term that doesn’t deserve attention (even though I’m giving it oxygen).
With Texas joining the SEC in 2024, the Lone Star Showdown is back, while A&M’s rivalry with LSU remains intact; so whether it’s on the gridiron, baseball field, or the basketball court, winning the games is all that matters, but hey, it is the offseason after all.
