Why Starbucks is reversing its open door policy in 2025

Here’s why.

One of the better things about Starbucks was their open-door policy that was started back in 2018. You could still hang out in one of the coffee chain’s stores without buying something.

That’s no longer going to be the case. Now, if you want to stay, you’re goin to have to pay, starting at the end of January.

It’s all part of a new code of conduct to encourage paying customers to come back. There are reports the chain has struggled as of late, and with new CEO Brian Niccol in place, the hope is this will help.

Per Bloomberg: “a code ‘is something most retailers already have and is a practical step that helps us prioritize our paying customers who want to sit and enjoy our cafes or need to use the restroom during their visit,’ Starbucks spokesperson Jaci Anderson said.”

Here’s what the code says:

We want to ensure our spaces are prioritized for use by our customers. Our Coffeehouse Code of Conduct is something most retailers have and is designed to provide clarity that our spaces – including our cafes, patios and restrooms – are for use by customers and partners.

The code of conduct is displayed in our stores to remind customers of the role they play in creating a community coffeehouse that is inviting and welcoming.
