It’s Starbucks Red Cup Day 2023, but here’s why you’re hearing about a ‘Red Cup Rebellion’ from employees

Here’s how to get a free red cup from Starbucks, but there are also employee protests to note.

As usual, Starbucks is offering its reusable red cup for the holiday season, this time on Thursday, Nov. 16 2023.

But there’s something else going on with Starbucks employees, which some are calling a “Red Cup Rebellion.”

Let’s start with how to get your free reusable red cup from Starbucks: Per the coffee chain, “Order any size handcrafted holiday or fall beverage – hot, iced or blended – and you’ll receive a free grande (16-ounce) Starbucks reusable red cup with a whimsical mod design.”

But getting the cup at your local Starbucks might be affected by what Starbucks Workers United are calling for:

Red Cup Day (November 16th) is Starbucks’s biggest sales event of the season  – and also one of the most infamously hard, understaffed days for the baristas that work them.

Last year, workers went on strike. This year, on the heels of victories won by striking workers across different industries nationwide, Starbucks workers are taking the rebellion to the next level! …

We’re inviting ALL Starbucks baristas and shift supervisors to join this year’s Red Cup Rebellion and walk out in solidarity alongside thousands of Starbucks Workers United baristas to protest Starbucks unfair labor practices.

There you have it.

He may look like a Starbucks barista, but Rutgers football’s Christian Dremel has the Big Ten on notice

Rutgers’ Christian Dremel on the unrelenting grind to land as one of the Big Ten’s top wide receivers.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Everyone loves a good walk-on story. But for Christian Dremel, he didn’t want to simply be a good story. Dremel, a senior and the team’s leading receiver wants to write a new story for Rutgers football in the Big Ten.

He sees a narrative for a team that is ready to be changed.

Dremel, a product of Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, New Jersey), came to Rutgers in 2019 to play for then-head coach Chris Ash. As a walk-on, he came without the fanfare and star rankings that many of the players came into the program with. That suited Dremel just fine.

All he had to do was simply work. And when Schiano returned to the program that next year, Dremel was ready to embrace a new and different role with the team.

For most walk-ons, the goal is to simply make the team and get spot action on special teams or have a handful of snaps. But Dremel’s dreams were never about what he could get from the program.

In what could best be described as a vision, Dremel asked himself a simple, selfless question: How could he change the narrative of a program that had been beaten down and laughed about for so long?

Dremel wanted to pour himself into Rutgers and be part of the program’s change.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to be around a lot of really great (players) -hefore I came here, I was able to spend a lot of time with like Michael Burton my senior year of high school and he was a walk on and he’s an extremely hard worker,” Dremel said on Wednesday following practice.

“Obviously, he’s played a lot, a lot…many years in the NFL. And like, that summer going in he definitely taught me a lot and it changed. It helped me create a mindset for myself on what my purpose was of coming here.

“And obviously, you know, it’s now my fifth year. It’s taken time but every single year under coach Schiano, you know, we’ve been working to just to win every single week, trying to go 1-0. And I think that – regardless if you’re a walk-on or scholarship guy – when you’re on a team you want to win and you want to help however you can.”

Following the 2020 season, Schiano put Dremel on scholarship.

Today, he leads Rutgers in receptions (21) and receiving touchdowns (3). He is second on the team, behind JaQuae Jackson, in receiving yardage (282).

The rise of Dremel

On Saturday, Dremel had six catches for 80 yards as Rutgers pulled off a dramatic comeback win over Michigan State. With the win, Rutgers is now 5-2 (2-2 Big Ten).

After the game, Schiano had a throwaway line in his post-Michigan State press conference. In talking about Dremmel, he referred to the Rutgers wide receiver in a way that only Schiano could and would.

The line didn’t get any pick-up nationally by the Big Ten Network or create any buzz. But any one paying attention understood what the Rutgers head coach was saying.

Schiano recalled seeing Dremel around the Hale Center, the team’s facility, and being struck with an impression about his wide receiver.

“The other day he had an oversized sweatshirt on and some loose pants, and you would have said the guy was, you know, the guy who serves the coffee at Starbucks,” Schiano said.

“You wouldn’t say he was a Big Ten slot receiver who is really doing well, and we were joking with him. But he is a fighter. He is a warrior, and he’s a lot faster than people think, too, which helps him, really helps him.”

Dremel is unassuming in that way. Despite the tattoos and a mustache that is trendy, he is not one to draw attention to himself.

He’d rather simply get down to work. In many ways, Dremel has intertwined himself into the program’s D.N.A. with leadership by example that has been built under pressure in his life for well over a decade.

Focused on the task at hand, he along with teammate [autotag]Kyle Monangai[/autotag], have very much bought into the ‘CHOP’ mentality instilled upon Schiano’s return to the program.

[lawrence-related id=31270,31264]

Growing up, Dremel played alongside Monangai on the Montclair Cobras, an elite junior program in north Jersey. It was there, in a setting that was ultra-competitive, where the now Big Ten player learned his first lessons about not just work ethic but also resilience.

“I really do think it goes back to those days when I was a young, a young guy playing in Montclair. That was a really good program, a really good youth program. definitely taught me how to be a tough worker, how to be a hard worker and then being able to go to school like Don Bosco Prep and learn from having a lot of tough guys before me play  -to see them and then kind of that just becomes a part of you,” Dremel said.

“And just being in this program, you know,  you have to be a hard worker in this program. Not a single guy in this program doesn’t work hard. You know, we’ve worked our tails off every single day. And it’s a detailed, focused work – it’s not just working for no reason. Like it’s focused, everything has a purpose, everything we do has a reason. And once you do that over and over and over again…it just becomes second nature.”

[lawrence-related id=31314]

Not surprisingly, Dremel isn’t a frills guy. When asked on Wednesday about Schiano’s comments comparing him to a Starbucks barista, the Rutgers wide receiver chuckled.

His signature drink, he said, was pretty unassuming. Not unlike the man himself.

“I just like, cold brew or like vanilla latte or something like that,” Dremel said.

Starbucks’ switch to nugget ice in its drinks, explained

Starbucks is changing what type of ice it uses in its drinks.

If you make daily Starbucks runs in the morning, you might notice a change in your iced beverage of choice.

CNN reported that the company will be switching its ice from its more standard ice chips to “nugget ice” in the next couple of years.

If you’ve ever gotten a soda at Sonic, that’s the kind of crunchy, airy ice that Starbucks will reportedly start adding to its iced drinks.

“The nuggets don’t melt any faster, the company said, and the switch to nuggets doesn’t mean customers will get any less ice since baristas are using the same ice scoop,” writes CNN Business’ Jordan Valinsky.

While you might not have new ice in your iced coffee anytime soon, the day will come when you will notice a difference in your Starbucks drink.

Via TODAY, a Reddit user caught a glimpse of the new “nugget ice” at the Starbucks location they visit.

New special ice (we are 1 of 3 cafe stores testing the new ice). What do you guys think? It looks like the ice at sonic.

A Starbucks representative provided a statement to TODAY confirming the ice changes in “select stores this year.”

“As we continue to innovate and make investments in the Starbucks Experience for our partners (baristas) and customers, we are introducing new machines that make nugget ice to select stores this year,” the rep told TODAY. “Like many of our recent investments, this machine allows partners to focus on delivering the Starbucks Experience while hand-crafting the same delicious, high-quality iced beverages our customers have come to expect from Starbucks.”

While it’s unclear the exact timeframe in which specific Starbucks locations will get the new nugget ice machines, it appears that the ice really is breaking in how the giant coffee chain chills its famous beverages.

Weird New Food and Drink from KFC, Krispy Kreme, French’s, Starbucks and Tamworth Distilling

We look at the latest weird products from fast food companies, a coffee chain and a distillery. Plus: Why you should care.

Every week, new food products come to market and some of them— healthy snacks, oddball drinks, fast food experiments, and a few novelty knickknacks — are creative enough to demand attention. Below we’ve put the spotlight on recently released products that made us either smile or do a double-take. Note: we haven’t tasted them… yet.

Whiskey Made with Crabs

Full name: Tamworth Distilling Crab Trapper

Why you should care: This New Hampshire company has teamed up with folks from the University of New Hampshire to create a green crab-flavored whiskey. Why green crabs? Because they’re delicious? Not really; the crustaceans are damaging New England’s coastal ecosystem. And making whiskey out of the critters is a form of sustainable population control. The final product, made with a bourbon base, is 51 percent ABV and is said to have notes of maple, vanilla, and caramel on the nose, followed by cinnamon, clove, and all-spice. Maybe a little brine too?

Price: $65 per bottle, available at Seelbachs.com and shop.tamworthdistilling.com.

Ketchup Ice Pops

Full name: French’s Frenchsicles

Why you should care: Rarely has ketchup been promoted to lead role in the culinary world. But times change. Voila: French’s is working with the Canadian ice pop brand Happy Pops to create ketchup ice pops, which is just what it sounds like: condiment frozen on stick and described as a delicious salty-sweet mashup. Currently, they’re only available as giveaways (and in Canada only). But you never know. French’s has already launched a mustard ice cream in the states. Could ketchup be next?

Price: Free if you can find it in Canada

Scents to Spray on Ice Cream

Full name: Salt & Straw Culinary Perfumes

Why you should care: Oregon-based ice cream company Salt & Straw teamed up with Portland perfumery Imaginary Authors to release three ice cream “perfumes.” The flavors/scents include A Cloud of Cocoa (notes of Ecuadorian chocolate, malted milkshake, and Japanese whisky), A Plume of Blumes (honeysuckle and jasmine), and A Swoon of Citrus (the tartness of citrus balanced with the herbal undertones of an entire orchard).  The products launch online and as a topping in shops starting July 17th, National Ice Cream Day. You can sign up for the waitlist by visiting the site. Smell ya later.

Price: $65 for a 65 mL bottle, $48 for a trio of 10 mL travel-sized bottles. Available at Salt & Straw’s scoop shops and online

KFC Finger Sporks

Full name: KFC Finger Sporks

Why you should care: According to the company formerly owned by Colonel Sanders, this is a “new ergonomic and gastronomic piece of tableware-tech” that will finally make KFC’s sides as finger-lickin’ good as its fried chicken. Ok, that may be a stretch, but they’re certainly the most useful culinary finger puppets we’ve seen and they will help you scoop out your mac & cheese, corn, and mashed potatoes (though this was never actually a problem). They’ve also produced a kitschy video to promote their “revolutionary eating device.” See video below.

Price:  Free for anyone who orders a KFC Sides Lovers Meal in person, online, in app, or at participating locations between June 21 and July 12 (while supplies last).

Krispy Kreme Ice Cream

Full name: Krispy Kreme Original Glazed Soft Serve Ice Cream (and Shakes)

Why you should care: For the first time ever, Krispy Kreme now offers Original Glazed Soft Serve Ice Cream — made with ingredients from Krispy Kreme’s secret Original Glazed Doughnut recipe, including its iconic glaze flavor, as well as real whole milk. The confection’s available in waffle cones —  made with Krispy Kreme’s doughnut mix and glaze flavor and cups —  in three flavors: plain Original Glazed, Strawberry Iced Sprinkled, or Chocolate Iced. It’s also offering shakes designed to taste like Krispy Kreme doughnut varieties: Original Glazed, Strawberry Iced Sprinkled, Chocolate Iced, Lemon Filled, Cookies & Kreme, Birthday Batter, and Coffee & Kreme. Your summer diet plan will just have to wait.

Price: Products are available in-shop and drive-thru only (for details and to search for a store near you, check out their online store)

Starbucks’ First Fried Chicken Sandwich

Full name: Starbucks Chicken Maple Butter and Egg Sandwich

Why you should care: Almost every other fast-food chain has introduced some kind of fried chicken sandwich — Wendy’s, McDonald’s, Popeyes, KFC, you name it. Now, finally, Starbucks jumps into the game with this breakfast item featuring breaded white meat chicken, fluffy eggs, and maple butter on a toasted oat biscuit roll. As you might expect, Youtubers have already pounced on the opportunity to review the thing.

Price: $5.93 including tax (in New York)

A Starbucks barista shared the wildest order from ‘Edward’ and everyone’s sharing other ridiculous coffee orders

Some wild orders ahead.

Alright, so we’ll start this off as we do with any viral social media post: we don’t know if it’s truly real.

But we do know that there are people who have very, very, VERY specific orders at Starbucks. And on Monday, we learned from a barista whose Twitter name is @ProjectJosiee about “Edward,” (that name was trending most of Monday) a customer whose order is super-duper long and complicated, basically a barista’s nightmare.

But it led to many responses from fellow baristas about similarly long and complex orders, which we’ll share below the tweet that got a ton of responses:

Wild!

Chad Johnson pays $1,000 for Starbucks, sort of

How much did Chad Johnson gladly pay for a lift to Starbucks and back in Florida?

Chad Johnson had quite the hankering to Starbucks it seemed on Saturday.

How else can one explain the former NFL wide receiver and personality extraordinaire seeking a ride to get his fix and offering $500 for a lift?

Each way.

Yes, the former colorful and controversial Cincinnati Bengal sought a ride to the coffee franchise giant and offered a cool, crisp grand if anyone were willing to take him there .. and back.

Someone named Joey McAvoy knew a great way to make a lot of dough easily and jumped at the chance less than a minute later with a response

Forty minutes after Johnson’s tweet, he was on his way, courtesy of McAvoy.

If anyone wonders what Ochocinco was doing with the rest of his day, it seems NASCAR Xfinity series is up next.
