Guess what day it is?
That’s right, it’s September 21st. As in, the 21st night of September. As in, BA-DEE-YA! It’s the day in which we have to drop everything and play September by Earth Wind & Fire (although you should play that song the other 364 days of the year, it’s the best).
But have you ever stopped to wonder the significance of September 21st in the song?
I did. And I found an answer straight from one of the songwriters. Via NPR in 2014, Allee Willis spoke about how she and the legendary Maurice White wrote the song, and there was this detail:
“We went through all the dates: ‘Do you remember the first, the second, the third, the fourth … ‘ and the one that just felt the best was the 21st,” Willis explains. “I constantly have people coming up to me and they get so excited to know what the significance was. And there is no significance beyond it just sang better than any of the other dates. So … sorry!”
There you have it. No significance! But we now have this day every year to celebrate.
