Why Derrick White is so good for the Boston Celtics

White can play on or off the ball, create for others, defend multiple positions, and hit timely shots.

Starting Boston Celtics point guard Derrick White continues to excel with the Celtics this season, with a case to make one of the league’s 2024 All-Defense teams and maybe even the first All-Star bid of his career. He is proving more reliable than former Celtics floor general Marcus Smart, fitting seamlessly into the offense and making winning plays consistently.

White’s clutch defense, including multiple blocks as a guard in a single tilt, alters games. His shooting gravity helps the offense flow better as well. The Colorado native is the perfect fit for Boston who does whatever is asked of him. White can play on or off the ball, create for others, defend multiple positions, and hit timely shots.

White could have an outside All-Star chance as the Celtics’ second-best player so far this season, but faces an uphill battle given the stacked East.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Beat” podcast linked up with Spotrac’s Keith Smith to talk over the case for White as an All-Star.
