While it’s becoming clear that many fans won’t get what they’ve been asking for when it comes to seeing true freshman Ty Thompson replace Anthony Brown at the quarterback position, the depth under center is still an interesting topic.
It’s a topic that is especially important in a week like this when the Oregon Ducks are set to face the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday, a team that they could potentially build a sizeable lead on in the second half.

Should this happen, it wouldn’t at all be a shock to see some backup QBs get time in the game. In fact, some could consider the game a disappointment should the Ducks be unable to get some time for the backups.
So if that does happen, which QB will we see off the bench first? Head coach Mario Cristobal answered that question on Wednesday.
“Ty [Thompson] has been a little bit ahead of Jay [Butterfield], but Jay is right there as well because he’s a really good player,” Cristobal said. “It’s been mostly those two guys. Robby [Ashford] is developing, but he is behind those guys.”

That depth chart is not a total shock, but it is the first time we’ve heard Cristobal articulate the order in which the QBs stand, to my knowledge. While it’s clear that none are apparently ready enough to take over the starting role, Cristobal seemed confident in their trajectory forwards.
“They’re really good players. They’re progressing,” Cristobal said of the three. “We’re playing them as we feel is the very best thing for our team, and that gives us the best chance to win.”
