Who Does Notre Dame Go After Following WR Colzie’s Decommit?

The Irish staff has had to make adjustments to their WR recruiting board, one new offer out plus others who could commit.

In a shocking development last week Georgia WR Deion Colzie decommitted from his so called favorite school and reopened his recruitment. Although Colzie has said he will still consider Notre Dame, very rarely does a player re-commit to the school after a decommitment.

Looking around the national landscape, Brian Kelly has been very selective with his scholarship offers out to wide receivers, as they previous had two in the bag, along with Ohio WR Lorenzo Styles Jr. Now with just one commit at the position, there will undoubtably be another player who will fill in Colzie’s spot. The Irish need to continue to recruit Styles Jr. as schools like Michigan are continuing to go after the talented wide out.

At the current moment, not including Colzie and Styles Jr., there are 13 other offers out to wide receivers. Some of the top names, Washington’s Emeka Egbuka, Florida’s Mario Williams and Louisiana’s Chris Hilton aren’t seriously considering the Irish. A top name to watch would be Maryland’s Don’t’e Thornton, who was set to announce today, will delay his commitment to visit schools again when allowed.

Other potential commits from the offer list are California’s Cristian Dixon and Michigan’s Andrel Anthony. Both of those players view Notre Dame as one of their top schools and could potentially select the Irish as their school of choice down the road.

A few new offers went out this week, only one true WR was offered, Texas’ J Michael Sturdivant. The Long Horn state prospect has a Top 7 out, but that was released before the Irish offer. We will see if the 6’2” and 183-pound player will adjust his recruiting after Notre Dame has stepped up to the plate.

New names will surely pop up between now and the early signing period, but that this moment the state of wide receiver recruiting for the Irish is a bit murky with Colzie reopening his recruiting. Decommitments are commonplace in the recruiting world now, but the bigger question is how Kelly and his staff will react to having to scramble to add another wide out in the 2021 class.
