TE Nate Becker
Dawson Knox is your No.1, and if he can stay healthy, there’s Tyler Kroft as your No.2 tight end. Tommy Sweeney should get a look at showing he’s got more to offer than Kroft, while Lee Smith is an extra blocker the Bills seem insistent upon keeping. Jason Croom, who previously got his shot to show his stuff late in 2018, is a long shot to make the roster himself. So Nate Becker… really has a long, long shot in this group.
Other candidates:
- S Garrett Taylor: Thomas and Taylor could be interchangeable.
- LB Del’Shawn Phillips: Long odds to make the roster in a packed linebacker room. The Bills appear to like Tyrel Dodson despite his off-field issues more.
- DE Bryan Cox Jr.: Again, even with his familiarity/ Carolina connections, Cox might be someone plucked off the roster early.
- OT Brandon Walton: Trey Adams seems like a safe bet to be kept for now, as mentioned, he was formerly a Day 1 prospect. Walton could very well go too, but the Bills didn’t draft any rookie linemen, so they might keep someone like Walton around.
- OL Ike Boettger: Boettger’s kicked around the Bills for a few seasons now, maybe they’ll want to give someone else a chance and send him packing. But those few snaps he’s seen the past two years could keep him around.
- DT Vincent Taylor: Pro Football Focus called Taylor a guy who “could surprise” next season. But he still could be gone because of how deep this position group is.
- DE Trent Murphy: More likely to be retained, Murphy is a cut candidate, but more likely at the end of camp when the Bills could save near $8 million on the cap. Buffalo would more likely try to trade him as well.
