DE Trent Murphy
Defensive end Trent Murphy continues to be a potential cap casualty. “Continues to be” is important reference.
The 29-year-old is still with the Bills despite all the roster trimming the team has done, namely releasing edge rusher Jonathan Woodard. That could have easily been Murphy because cutting him would save the Bills $8 million on their salary cap. Instead, Murphy survives.
However, Murphy likely remains because the Bills are currently… OK in terms of the cap. Their near $24M in cap space puts the club with the eighth-most cap space in the NFL following opt outs. Murphy still has to have a good camp if he wants to stay on the Bills, though.
On paper, Murphy is nothing more than the No. 3 defensive end in Buffalo’s rotation there. Mario Addison and Jerry Hughes are higher on the pecking order, and AJ Epenesa is there in a depth role as well. Since the Bills still have Murphy on their roster, maybe he can convince them it’s worth keeping him? Regardless, he’s off their books next season since anyway as he’s in the final year of his three-year deal he previously signed with the team.
