Whether you are a Texas fan or hoping that the NCAA finds a way to give them the death penalty, you will likely agree with this statement: Texas is a top five job in college football.
The Athletic ranked the top head coaching jobs in college football less than a year ago, and Texas landed at No. 5 behind the likes of Alabama, Ohio State, and Georgia, but ahead of LSU.
Why does Texas stand out among those five? They are the only school that has not won a national championship or even appeared in one in the last five years.
The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel had this to say about the coveted job.
A lot of people (not just Texas fans) romanticize the Texas job because that great 2000-2009 run.
Texas has won three national titles in its history. It's a lot harder job than people realize.

First, Texas has won four national championships (the same as LSU and one more than Georgia) in its history.
Second, much of the success in college football comes from getting the right head coach, and frankly, that takes luck. Alabama was lucky that they had an opening and Nick Saban did not get it going with the Dolphins. Ohio State was lucky that they needed a coach and Urban Meyer was available. LSU was lucky that Ed Orgeron united Joe Brady with Joe Burrow. Lastly, Georgia was lucky that Kirby Smart learned under Saban for so many years.
That has not been Texas’ luck for the last decade. Perhaps Steve Sarkisian will be the lucky break that the Longhorns have been hoping for.
