Where Texas commit Maalik Murphy ranks among 2022 quarterbacks

The future Longhorn may have dropped in the overall rankings, but he still considered one of the best quarterback prospects in the nation.

Texas has a highly touted quarterback commit in Maalik Murphy for the 2022 recruiting class, although he’s expected to be a work in progress when he gets to the Forty Acres.

247Sports adjusted their rankings on Wednesday, as the high school and college football seasons are at the halfway point now. The future Texas signal-caller dropped a few spots in the rankings from the No. 171 overall prospect, to the No. 176 prospect in the nation.

Here are what the evaluators of Murphy said about his move down:

Four-star quarterback Maalik Murphy saw a small slide of five spots in the rankings update, but he still remains one of the top quarterbacks in the country. Murphy continues to develop with the more varsity experience he gets, and his tools and upside give him a lot of potential at the next level.

Murphy has seen a steady decline in his rating in comparison to the beginning of the season, where he was once rated as a five-star. It has mostly been due to his limited experience as a varsity quarterback, as this is his first full season.

Nonetheless, Murphy has still earned a spot as one of the nation’s top signal callers, especially thanks to his performance at the Elite 11.

It’s worth noting that recent offer recipient and current USC commit Devin Brown is four spots higher than Murphy at No. 5. The Longhorns have been trying to add another quarterback to the class, which could mean they are expecting to lose someone to the transfer portal.
