Where Sporting News ranks UNC QB Drake Maye ahead of 2023 season

We take a look at where The Sporting News ranked UNC football quarterback Drake Maye.

North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye is finding himself high on a lot of lists for the upcoming 2023 college football season. From top quarterbacks to top players returning and even top players in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Maye’s name is usually near the top.

And a recent list by The Sporting News is no different.

The publication released its quarterback rankings for the 2023 season, and right there at No. 2 is Maye. He’s behind only USC’s Caleb Williams who is in the top spot as the two are the best at their position going into this 2023 season.

Here is what Bill Bender had to say about Maye and his ranking:

Maye was a breakout star for the Tar Heels last season, and the combination of size (6-4, 220 pounds) and mobility (698 yards, 7 TDs) are added features to a skill set that will translate to franchise quarterback at the next level. According to PFF, Maye led the nation with 36 big-time throws last season. He’s a playmaker who is looking to lead the Tar Heels back to the ACC championship game in 2023, and he will be in the conversation to be the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Maye and Williams should be battling it out for the top quarterback and player in college football next season. They should also hear their names called within the top 5 during the 2024 NFL draft.
