Where Roger McCreary lands in latest mock draft

Could Roger McCreary help one of the worst defenses in the NFL?

As we move on in the month of April, the NFL draft is fast approaching. For [autotag]Roger McCreary[/autotag], this means one step closer to achieving his dream of playing in the NFL.

According to Todd McShay of ESPN (subscription required), McCreary slides all the way to No. 47 overall with the Washington Commanders.

What McShay Says…

Depth at cornerback behind William Jackson III and Kendall Fuller remains a concern for the Commanders, and McCreary excels in press-man coverage and has the ball skills to make big plays. He broke up 15 passes last season. But he will have to improve against the run, and some questions remain about his speed.

McCreary has been one of the most consistent boundary defenders during his time on the Plains. Putting him in Washington would give them some quality depth until he can work his way into the starting cornerback slots. While he shows the ability to cover inside or outside, the former Auburn Tiger is best served as an outside cornerback in a press-man scheme.

According to Pro Football Focus, McCreary broke up 29 passes in four seasons with Auburn. He was graded as the No. 1 overall defender on the team with a grade of 89.9 and a coverage grade of 89.7.

This move would make sense given that Washington surrendered the most touchdown passes in the NFL and ranked No. 29 in passing yards allowed. They need a lot of help if they want to have a “commanding presence” on the football field in 2022. It would start with adding Auburn’s best cornerback, Roger McCreary.
