The 2024 college football season is almost here. In fact, Penn State will face off against West Virginia in Morgantown 30 days from now. Fall practice began yesterday for the Nittany Lions, so we are underway in Happy Valley.
CBS Sports kicked off the day by revealing its official 1-134 ranking for the upcoming season. Georgia is ranked No. 1, while UL-Monroe is ranked No.134, with every other FBS team ranked in between.

Unsurprisingly, the top of the ranking is filled with Big Ten and SEC teams. College football is now a two-conference power, with 34 schools making up those two conferences as of this year. CBS’s top 10, for example, only includes two teams that are not from those power conferences: Notre Dame (Independent) and Utah (Big 12). The Big Ten and SEC, meanwhile, each boast four teams in that top 10.
Penn State is currently ranked No. 7, which is roughly five slots higher than most other early rankings. Ohio State (No. 2) and Oregon (No. 3) are the only two Big Ten teams that rank ahead of the Nittany Lions, while Michigan comes in at No. 9.
