Throughout the 2020 NFL season, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and wide receiver Stefon Diggs have sat near the top of the charts in terms of their individual stats.
Where the duo end the year remains to be seen. A lot of that depends on what goes down Sunday. First and foremost, do either guy play? It’s possible that Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott decides he’s seen enough and decides to sit both against the Miami Dolphins.
Or perhaps they’ll actually play the whole game? The answer remains to be seen. But in terms of those statistics, regardless, both should finish among the NFL’s best.
Starting with the quarterback, Allen, who has led the league in passing yards at various points of the season, currently sits in the third spot with 4,320. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes does pace the NFL with 4,740, but it was already announced that he’s not playing in Week 17:
Yardage isn’t alone for Allen. Some of his other statistics are sitting pretty including his 34 touchdown passes (4th), 69.1 completion percentage (5th) and QB rating (106.3).
Aside from passing yards, the next stat folks usually look to is touchdowns. Allen’s 34 is well behind the league-leader in the Packers’ Aaron Rodgers, who has 44. But let’s count all our chickens here. Allen also has eight rushing touchdowns and a receiving score. That’s only one behind Rodgers at 43 total.
Jumping over to Diggs, unlike Allen, who would be looking to gain on Sunday, the receiver just has plenty to lose. Diggs’ 120 catches and 1,459 yards leads the NFL currently:
Behind him in both of those categories, respectively, is the Cardinals’ DeAndre Hopkins (111) and the Chiefs’ Travis Kelce (1,416). However, Hopkins and the Cardinals are battling for a playoff spot in their season finale and like Mahomes, Kelce will be resting for Week 17. In terms of both of those stats, Hopkins is the biggest threat because he’s also third in yardage with 1,372. Still, that’s a big game for him if he surpassed Diggs, who also might still add to his numbers against the Dolphins.
Finally, Diggs has eight total touchdowns this year after his three scores just last week. He’s still well behind the league’s leader, Packers wideout Davante Adams (17).
Unfortunately, only Diggs and Allen will look to add to their numbers this week. Slot wide receiver Cole Beasley was ruled out and he’ll fall just short of his first 1,000-yard season. His numbers will finish the year at 82 catches (13th) and 967 yards (18th). He’s currently in good company, though. Beasley actually has more catches than guys like DK Metcalf (80) and Terry McLaurin (80) and his yards currently sits above Adam Thielen (868) and Mike Evans (960).
