Where Drake Maye ranks in CBS Sports’ post-spring QB rankings

Here is where UNC football quarterback Drake Maye lands in the updated CBS Sports quarterback rankings.

We are still a few months away from the start of the 2023 college football season but the excitement for the North Carolina Tar Heels is surrounded by quarterback Drake Maye.

The quarterback is back for his second year as the starter and is one of the top contenders for the Heisman Trophy. Maye returns as UNC’s best player but also as one of the best quarterbacks and players.

And with spring practices over, Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports released his updated quarterback rankings for the new season. Last year, we saw Maye climb the rankings and even get near the top at one point.

On the updated list, Maye ranks No. 2 behind only Caleb Williams:

Speaking of those early mock drafts, Drake Maye gets a boost in these rankings because he showed up right behind Williams at No. 2 in many of them. Should that matter? Maybe not. Does it? Yep! There had been some speculation that Maye could leave North Carolina to join a title contender this offseason, but it looks like he’s staying at North Carolina. Let’s pretend that loyalty played a role in this ranking, too. It didn’t, but if we say it did, it makes it look like we have integrity.

Maye moved up from No. 3 to No. 2 as Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. slipped to No. 4 behind Williams, Maye and Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers.
