Lefty enters his 29th US Open continuing his search to become the 6th player ever to win the coveted Career Grand Slam. With six runner-up finishes in our National Championship, a win this year at Winged Foot would not only further establish him as one of the best to ever play the game, but would bring him sweet redemption from his 2nd place finish at Winged Foot in 2006. Phil has been playing amazing golf in the weeks leading up to Winged Foot, hitting bombs, making birdies, and chalking up a “W” in his first Champions Tour event. Always dialed in with his equipment, here as a look at the clubs Phil will use as he tries to claim his first US Open title.

DRIVER

Phil has been hitting some absolute BOMB’s this year with his MAVRIK Sub-Zero Driver. Phil plays his driver at 9° and not only loves the ballspeed MAVRIK gives him, but a high MOI construction offers more forgiveness so he can be more accurate. At 50, Phil is still one of the longest and fittest guys out on Tour. Course length won’t be an issue for Lefty at a historically tough Winged Foot.

FAIRWAY(S)

The MAVRIK Sub Zero 3-Wood has been in Phil’s bag since the start of the year. He plays it at a strong 13.5° loft and is a great option for him both off the tee, and when he needs to reach a long Par 5 in two. With notoriously brutal rough and Winged Foot’s two Par 5’s playing 535 and 633 yards, you will probably see him go to this club more than few times throughout the week.

IRONS

Phil has one of the more interesting iron set-ups in the game, using a combo set of four different models of Callaway Irons. His driving iron is an 18° X-Forged Utility iron that he likes to hit very low with a lot of rollout. His long irons (4-6) are Callaway’s Epic Forged irons which he says has really helped him dial in his spin rates in that part of the bag. For the lower irons Phil plays an Apex Pro 7 iron and the APEX MB’s (Muscleback) in 8-PW that give him the turf interaction and precision he is looking for to go birdie hunting.

GOLF BALL

Phil has played the Chrome Soft X Triple Track ball since his 2019 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am victory. He loves the combination of ball speed off the tee and the control with his irons and wedges. He also loves the benefits of Triple Track Technology, which helps golfers improve alignment and particularly helps promote better putting accuracy.

WEDGES

Phil co-created the PM Grind 19 Wedges with Callaway Chief Designer and legendary wedge maker Roger Cleveland. They worked on improvements to the PM Grind that make it easier to hit three essential shots Phil thinks every golfer needs: the knockdown, the hit and check, and the “Phlop”. Phil has one of the best and most versatile short games in the world, a useful tool when navigating tricky Winged Foot.

PUTTER

Phil has played most of this season with a custom Odyssey blade putter modeled closely after the classic 8802 head shape. Phil has his equipped with a White Hot XG insert, and Phil Mickelson stamping on the bottom. Just one of the many perks of being a 5-time Major Champion.
