What Texas WR Xavier Worthy said about the quarterback competition

Worthy praised both quarterbacks for their performances during spring practice up to this point.

Texas will be home to one of the hottest quarterback battles in the country this offseason.

Sophomore Hudson Card, who is in his second year of Steve Sarkisian’s offense, will have to fend off former five-star quarterback and Ohio State transfer Quinn Ewers.

Many feel Card will have the upper hand in the competition through the spring, as Ewers will have to settle in to Sarkisian’s system and familiarize himself with the speed of the game. Ewers was buried on the depth chart at Ohio State after forgoing his senior year of high school.

Although it is likely to be a close battle through fall camp, many feel Ewers will eventually pull ahead of Card due to his unique talent. Ewers held a perfect 1.0000 rating coming out of high school, which was enough to be labeled the No. 1 overall recruit in both the 2021 and 2022 recruiting classes.

Whichever quarterback wins the battle will have the privilege of throwing to one of the top wide receivers in the country, Xavier Worthy. Texas’ top pass catcher spoke with reports last weekend and seems to be embracing the quarterback competition.

Yeah Quinn, he puts some zip on that thing. But they both throw a pretty good ball. It’s a QB battle; they’re both doing really good right now, so I’m excited to see how that turns out. It’s good to have QB battles and battles at every position. So everybody, their spot’s just not secure. You have to still work every day, so I felt like it was good getting (Ewers to come here).

Texas will have no shortage of playmakers on the offensive side of the ball this upcoming season, but they must receive elite play at the quarterback position in order to truly get back to national relevancy. Whether it’s Card or Ewers, the pressure they will be under this season will be enormous.
