Following the team’s decision to release offensive lineman Quinton Spain, Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane explained the reasoning this saga came to such a shocking conclusion on Wednesday.
According to ESPN’s Marcel Louis-Jacques, Beane said that the 29-year-old became unhappy with his role on the team and the Bills wanted to give him a chance to find a better situation he liked. Per Justin Melo of Draft Wire, Spain requested the move. Previously a starter all of 2019 and over the course of Buffalo’s first two games of the season, Spain was then benched.
“I don’t think that sat well with him,” Beane said.
One could assume that Beane also shopped Spain as well on the trade market but did not find any suitors.
In the GM also took the high road and said there’s no bad blood going on between the two sides.
“There’s no blame to go around,” Beane said. “Nothing happened, there’s no one thing that, ‘this happened and the dam broke.'”
Like the front office executive, Spain took to social media moments before his release from the team and made a shocking statement in a cryptic message. That question of what was going on was soon lifted because minutes later, the Bills announced his release.
In that social media message from the offensive lineman, Spain did say “it’s time for a change” but did add a thank you to the Bills and Bills Mafia for supporting him.
While also the professional route, Spain did get caught saying something he later wished he had not said. Spain later posted to social media: “Only if they knew the real reason.” Right after, Spain deleted the message but it was still screen grabbed by Bills Wire’s Bradley Gelber.
That second statement suggests that while Spain and the Bills are trying to put on nice faces and keep things professional, there were clearly some issues going on behind closed doors that folks won’t ever know about.
Regardless, Spain’s free to sign anywhere else now.
