As far as preseason games go, one of the biggest will be the Buffalo Bills’ Week 2 contest. It’s against the Chicago Bears on the road.
That outing will be a bit of a revenge game… or as interesting of one as you can get in the preseason. Buffalo quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is going back to where it all started.
Formerly the No. 2 overall pick of the Bears at the 2017 NFL draft, Trubisky is getting a crack at his former employer on Saturday. Furthermore, he’s starting under center as Josh Allen is going to be resting once again.
Buckle up.
Just kidding, it is still an exhibition after all.
Probably because of that, Trubisky didn’t have too much to say specifically about returning to Chicago when he spoke via press conference last week.
“It’ll be weird going back there, but I’m lookin forward to it,” Trubisky said.
However, indirectly, Trubisky was much more… direct, with his feelings.
In terms of now playing for the Bills as opposed to the Bears, Trubisky said he’s “getting the love for the game back.” Additionally, he said he felt like the Bears were believing in him less and less over the years.
Because of that, leaving Chicago seemed inevitable to him.
“It was disappointing but it wasn’t a surprise,” Trubisky said when asked about the fifth-year option on his rookie deal not being picked up by Chicago.
When signing with the Bills, Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane said it might be one year and done for Trubisky in Orchard Park. Time will tell if that’s true as the QB did admit he didn’t really get any offers this offseason to go to compete for a starting job.
But while he is here, McDermott did say he’s glad to see what Trubisky has produced throughout the offseason for the Bills after his… bit of a mess in Chicago.
“I love it when I see him smile out here because maybe he hasn’t been able to do much of that the last couple years,” McDermott said via press conference. “He’s been a great add to our football team.”
On Thursday, running back Matt Breida, who might get plenty of playing time with Trubisky this weekend, added he’s at least hopeful for a little revenge of sorts.
“I’m excited for him to go back to Chicago and show them they made a mistake,” Breida said.
