On Saturday, it was reported that the Lions had traded quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Rams for quarterback Jared Goff, two first-round picks and a third-round pick.

It’s rare to see two starting quarterbacks swapped for each other, but that just spoke to how badly Stafford wanted out of Detroit and how badly Los Angeles wanted to get out from underneath Goff’s contract.

Fans of the Vikings, Packers and Bears are probably happy about the trade. While Detroit didn’t have tons of success underneath Stafford, you could hardly blame him. Goff should be considered a massive downgrade and Detroit needs to build a blueprint like the Rams did in order to find success with him as the starting quarterback.

The Lions can get out from Goff’s contract (which has four years and more than $100 million left on it) for no penalty after the 2022 season. For Detroit, you have to think that is certainly worth two first-round picks.

Goff is 5-2 all-time against the NFC North. The Vikings are 1-1 against Goff.
