We are witnessing an improbable turn of events regarding Victor Wembanyama

The Spurs star was not supposed to be so good defensively so fast.

In the month of February 2024, San Antonio Spurs rookie forward phenom Victor Wembanyama blocked a total of 47 shots. To say the least, that is a lot of rejections — in fact, more blocked shots than several entire NBA teams over that stretch.

Following in the footsteps of basketball legends like Manute Bol, Alonzo Mourning, Shaquille O’Neal, and fellow Spurs big man David Robinson, Wemby is leading the league in blocked shots in his first season in the NBA. It seems like every game he plays in, the French big man sets a new record, or records a stat line no one else in history has before him.

It can be hard to believe what we are seeing from Wembanyama on the court in just his first season in the Association, but numbers do not lie.

The folks behind the “Heat Check” YouTube channel recently put together a clip looking at the defensive growth of Wemby so far this season. Check it out above!
