After a bit of a chaotic sequence of events in the first quarter saw Penn State and Ohio State recover fumbles on consecutive plays, Sean Clifford and the Nittany Lions offense went to work putting the first points on the scoreboard Saturday night. Penn State put together a 13-play touchdown drive that spanned 89 yards to five the road underdogs an early 7-0 lead in Ohio Stadium.
After picking up a first down entirely on the ground on three plays to start the drive from the Penn State 11-yard line, Clifford connected on a couple of big pass plays with a 16-yard gain to KeAndre Lambert-Smith on a 3rd-and-9, and a 32-yard gain with Parker Washington turning on the jets over the middle of the field. The play was aided by a nice block by tight end Brenton Strange.
On the next play, set up inside the red zone, Clifford tossed a short pass to his right into the hands of running back Keyvone Lee, who picked up 11 yards on the play. On the next snap, Clifford let the play unfold long enough for Strange to find some open space in the middle of the field. Once he got his hands on the pass, Strange stretched his way to get the ball into the end zone for the first score of the game.
