Former Alabama running back Derrick Henry is getting ready for year No. 5 in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans. He led the Titans to the AFC Championship game in 2019 and is among the top running backs in the league.
One aspect of Henry’s game that allows him to stand above the rest – quite literally – is his strength and stature. In 2019, the 2015 Heisman-winning running back ranked No. 2 in the NFL for yards after contact with 968.
He is able to do that by being one of the strongest on the field and perfecting a skill that most try, but few are able to excel at. Stiff arms.
The defense can lay out an impressive hit, tackle or sack, but the offense is left with flashy jukes, hurdles and blocks. Stiff arms are the most physical thing a ball carrier can do while running.
In January, Henry was practicing stiff arms and actually broke a helmet.
Now, in preparation for the 2020 NFL season, Henry is still looking to get even better at the often overlooked skill.
In a video posted by Will Boling of 104.5 ‘The Zone,’ in Nashville, Tennessee, Henry is seen running alongside other fellow running backs with resistance bands. However, he has a helmet following in front of him, which he repeatedly bats down.
