Washington expected to add another coach with deep NFL lineage

The Washington Huskies continue to add coaches with deep NFL ties to their staff, bringing in Luke Del Rio.

Jedd Fisch has seemingly made it his mission to bring as many coaches with NFL experience as possible to the Washington Huskies and continued that trend on Friday afternoon with the acquisition of former Florida quarterbacks coach Luke Del Rio according to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman.

Del Rio attended school at Alabama and Oregon State before earning a chance to start at quarterback for the University of Florida, where he went 5-1 in 2016 before a torn labrum cut his season short. He then suffered a broken collarbone in 2017, effectively ending his playing career as he transitioned into coaching.

The son of longtime NFL coach Jack Del Rio, who acted as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars for eight seasons and was the defensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders from 2020-2023, joined the Commanders’ staff in 2020 as an offensive quality control analyst.

In 2022 he was promoted to assistant quarterbacks coach and remained with the Commanders through the end of the 2023 season, when head coach Ron Rivera was relieved of his duties. Del Rio is expected to join the staff as an offensive analyst, giving Fisch another promising young coach with a lot of experience under his belt.

Fisch continues to preach his connections to the NFL level and they appear to be paying off. While he and Jack Del Rio never coached together, the coaching community seems to be buying what Washington’s new head coach is selling as his social media team continues to push the team’s new brand as the “33rd NFL team.”
