Washington DL Anthony James enters transfer portal

Washington defensive lineman Anthony James entered the transfer portal Wednesday after one season with the Huskies.

A second scholarship Husky has elected to explore his options as a transfer, just one day after safety Vincent Holmes entered the portal. Defensive lineman Anthony James reportedly put his name in the transfer portal on Wednesday after one year with Washington.

Listed at 6-foot-5 and 272 pounds, James had not practiced all spring as he rehabbed from a shoulder injury. He likely would have stepped into a reserve role behind Voi Tunuufi as a hybrid edge rusher/defensive tackle with versatility to play in either role.

Washington has a relatively deep stable of pass rushers, led by Zach Durfee, who was absent from Tuesday’s practice after leaving Saturday’s session early with an injury. Maurice Heims, Isaiah Ward, and Tunuufi have also taken reps with the first team, with Jacob Lane, Lance Holtzclaw, and Milton Hopkins Jr. working primarily with the second team.

A three-star recruit out of Wylie East High School in Texas, James was ranked as the No. 60 defensive line recruit in the 2023 class by 247Sports. He originally committed to Texas A&M before flipping to Washington.

James and Holmes are the only two scholarship players to enter the portal since it opened Tuesday. Walk-on quarterback Camdyn Stiegeler and defensive lineman Habib Bello also have elected to transfer.
