Washington baseball swept by USC after ninth inning rally falls short

The Huskies couldn’t muster a win in Los Angeles and fell victim to a sweep at the hands of the USC Trojans.

The Washington Huskies were unable to come away with a win against the USC Trojans in Los Angeles after falling 6-5 on Sunday afternoon.

Left fielder AJ Guerrero did all he could to mount a comeback for coach Jason Kelly’s team, as the junior went 2 for 3 on the day with a home run and 5 runs batted in. Second baseman Aiva Arquette also collected 3 hits and scored 3 runs, but Washington couldn’t push across the tying run in the ninth inning after Guerrero’s RBI single scored Arquette.

Spencer Dessart took the loss for the Huskies, allowing 5 hits and 4 earned runs over just two innings of work. Xavier Martinez earned his second win of the season for the Trojans after two scoreless innings of work in relief, and Josh Blum secured his third save of the season.

The Huskies fell to 9-15-1 with the loss and 3-9 in Pac-12 play while USC improved to 15-16 overall and 9-5 against conference opponents. Kelly’s team will return to action at home on Tuesday evening for a matchup with Seattle University at 6:05.
