Klay Thompson will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. The veteran sharpshooter has slowly found his rhythm after a slow start to the season.
The Golden State Warriors have been expected to be active around the trade deadline.
However, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the franchise isn’t interested in parting ways with one of its core veterans. Thompson has been with the Warriors his entire career; he will likely sign a new deal with the franchise in the summer. Golden State followed a similar blueprint with Draymond Green‘s free agency last season, inking him to a four-year $100 million extension in the offseason.
Thompson has participated in 42 games this season, averaging 17.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists. He’s shooting 42.1% from the field and 38.5% from 3-point range. While his ability to defend quicker guards has certainly diminished given his injury history, he’s still a capable wing defender and can provide upside as a helper.
As such, it’s unlikely we see Thompson suiting up for a new team anytime soon, especially in the middle of a season when the Warriors are fighting to get back on track and qualify for the playoffs.
