Walker Jenkins signs with Minnesota Twins before deadline

Former UNC baseball commit Walker Jenkins officially signed a deal with the Minnesota Twins ahead of deadline.

Former North Carolina baseball recruit Walker Jenkins is officially a member of the Minnesota Twins.

After the Twins selected the UNC to commit out of South Brunswick High School at No. 5 overall in the 2023 draft, he became the final player in the first round to sign with his team. He was also the final Twins draft pick to sign, as he beat Tuesday afternoon’s deadline to get a deal done.

Jenkins agreed to a $7,144,200 signing bonus which is a little above the slot value for the pick. The talented outfielder is a client of Scott Boras and was able to get the deal done despite it coming down to the wire.

“It’s really just been a lot of hanging around, working out and hitting baseballs,” said the 18-year-old Jenkins via the StarTribune.

Jenkins was considered one of the best overall prospects this draft and the top high school prospect in this class. With the new MLB lottery, the Twins saw their pick move up and eventually landed No. 5 where they took the high school slugger.
