Vols outlast Indiana State in extra innings

Recapping Tennessee’s win over Indiana State on Sunday.

After being swept in a doubleheader Saturday, Tennessee found its way back into the win column with a walk-off Sunday afternoon.

The No. 15 Volunteers outlasted Indiana State, 6-5 in 11 innings, at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. UT claimed the game when Luc Lipcius scored on an error by the Sycamores (3-4).

The Vols (7-2) had to put in extra work to salvage a series split against Indiana State, but Tennessee grabbed the lead early as it scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Pete Derkay started the scoring in the opening frame with an RBI single. He would later come home on a hit by Jordan Beck. Connor Pavolony drove in another run with a sacrifice fly.

Tennessee extended its lead to 5-0 with a pair of runs in the fifth as Max Ferguson had a double that plated Beck and Jake Rucker.

Indiana State used the long ball to pull even in the game as Josue Urdaneta crushed a two-run homer in the sixth. Diego Gines had a two-run double in the eighth to make it 5-4.

The Sycamores would tie things at 5-5 when they scored on a wild pitch before Tennessee earned victory in the 11th inning.

Reliever Redmond Walsh recorded his second victory of the season as he pitched 4.2 innings. He surrendered three unearned runs and three hits.
