Vols’ depth chart ahead of Bowling Green game: Running back unit preview

Tennessee released its game week depth chart on Monday ahead of its season-opening matchup with Bowling Green.

The Vols and Falcons are slated to kick off Thursday at 8 p.m. EDT (SEC Network) at Neyland Stadium.

The contest is Josh Heupel’s first as Tennessee’s head coach. Heupel came to Tennessee after compiling a 28-8 record from 2018-20 as UCF’s head coach.

At UCF, a utility position was listed on the Knights’ depth chart.

The utility position within Heupel’s offensive scheme allows for a running back to be used in the passing and running game. Players in the utility position are versatile and positioned in various spots on the field.

Tennessee’s depth chart that was released on Monday did not include the utility position, only listing Tiyon Evans as the starting running back with Jabari Small or Jaylen Wright as second-team.

All three running backs can be used in Heupel’s scheme and Small and Wright have the ability to be used in the unlisted utility position.
