Tennessee defeats Tennessee Tech in season opener.

No. 11 Tennessee (1-0) opened its 2022-23 season with a 75-43  victory against Tennessee Tech Monday at Thompson-Boling Arena.

The Vols’ defense surrendered 16 points during the first 20 minutes.

Tyreke Key, a graduate transfer from Indiana State, came off the bench to lead Tennessee with 17 points against the Golden Eagles (0-1). He scored 11 points in the first half and was the only player to record double figures before halftime.

Zakai Zeigler started for the Vols and finished with 12 points, four assists and two rebounds.

Santiago Vescovi scored nine points, making three shots from beyond the 3-point arc. He also finished with eight rebounds and five assists.

Josiah-Jordan James came off the bench and scored eight points. Freshman Julian Phillips recorded eight points for the Vols.

Brett Thompson recorded 15 points for the Golden Eagles, who were 4-for-22 from the floor in the first half.
