No. 1 Tennessee notched a midweek win Tuesday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
The Volunteers (34-3, 14-1 SEC) defeated Bellarmine, 9-3, at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Jorel Ortega, who was named SEC Player of the Week, sparked Tennessee’s offense. He went 3-for-5 with a home run, triple, three runs scored and an RBI against the Knights (7-29, 5-10 ASUN).
The Vols scored first and never trailed. Tennessee scored the game’s first run in the fourth inning when Logan Seenstra’s groundout plated Luc Lipcius.
Tennessee extended its advantage to 5-0 in the fifth inning as Kyle Booker hit a three-run double. He later scored when Steenstra doubled.
The Vols added a run in the sixth inning when Jordan Beck doubled. Ortega scored to extend Tennessee’s lead, 5-3. The Knights scored on a three-run home run by Matt Higgins in the top of the sixth inning.
In the seventh inning, Lipcius scored on a wild pitch and Christian Moore had an RBI single.
Zander Sechrist (3-0) started for the Vols and pitched 4.1 innings, posting one strikeout and not allowing a baserunner.
Hollis Fanning, J.D. McCracken, Ethan Smith, Mark McLaughlin, Kirby Connell, Drew Patterson and Gavin Brasosky all appeared in relief for the Vols.
Tennessee used 22 players in the contest.
