How UT has fared in football games it’s played on Sept. 7

KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

Vols Wire is looking at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in the history of the program.

September 7

The Vols are 3-1-1 in games contested on Sept. 7. They first played on that date in 1974 when head coach Bill Battle and the Big Orange traveled to play UCLA. The Bruins were ranked No. 12 in the nation and coached by Dick Vermeil, who would later lead the St. Louis Rams to a Super Bowl victory over the Tennessee Titans.

That game against the Bruins at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum would end in a 17-17 tie.

In 1996, the Volunteers and Bruins would renew acquaintances on the gridiron on Sept. 7. This time, Tennessee would emerge victorious as it nabbed a 35-20 victory at Neyland Stadium.

On Sept. 7, 2002, the Vols toppled Middle Tennessee State, 26-3, at Neyland Stadium.

UT knocked off Western Kentucky, 52-20, in Knoxville on Sept. 7. 2013.

The Vols last played on Sept. 7 last season and they would fall to BYU, 29-26, in Knoxville.
