KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.
Vols Wire is looking at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in the history of the program.
Sept. 6
Tennessee is 4-1 in games contested on Sept. 6 and all games featuring the Volunteers on that date, but one, have been played in the friendly confines of Neyland Stadium.
The Vols first played on Sept. 6 in 1980. That game was a Southeastern Conference tilt against the Georgia Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs edged the Big Orange, 16-15, on their way to a 12-0 season, an SEC title and a national championship. Currently, that is the only conference game to be played by the Vols on Sept. 6.
On Sept. 6, the Vols have wins over New Mexico (1986), at UCLA (1997), Marshall (2003) and Arkansas State in 2014.
