How Tennessee has fared in football games contested on Sept. 24

KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

Vols Wire is taking a look at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in its program history.

September 24

The Vols have played on Sept. 24 on 13 occasions and hold an 8-5 record in games contested on that date.

UT first played on Sept. 24 in 1921 and the Big Orange notched a 27-0 victory over Emory & Henry.

In 1927, Tennessee shut out Carson-Newman 32-0.

In 1932, the Vols traveled to Chattanooga and returned to Knoxville with a 13-0 victory.

The Volunteers defeated University of the South, 26-3, in 1938. In 1949, the Vols outlasted Mississippi State 10-0.

Tennessee and the Bulldogs met again in 1955. This time, Mississippi State emerged victorious, claiming a 13-7 victory over the Vols.

In 1960, UT played Auburn in Birmingham, Alabama and the Vols edged the Tigers, 10-3. The Vols tangled with the Tigers in Birmingham again in 1966 and Auburn shut out the Big Orange, 28-0.

In 1977, Auburn edged Tennessee 14-12 in Knoxville. The Vols lost at Auburn, 37-14, in 1983. In 1988, the Tigers came to Tennessee and routed the Volunteers 38-6.

In 1994, Tennessee lost to Mississippi State 24-21 in Starkville.

The Vols last played on Sept. 24 in 2018. They outlasted the Florida Gators, 38-28, at Neyland Stadium.
