Vols’ all-time record on October 17

The Volunteers have not had much success on Oct. 17. They played 14 times and have a 4-7-3 record in games contested on this date.

The Big Orange, however, have a chance to improve upon that mark today when they host Kentucky at noon EDT at Neyland Stadium.

Tennessee first played on  Oct. 17 in 1903 when it lost to in-state rival Vanderbilt, 40-0.

In 1908, the Vols edged Kentucky State 7-0. UT routed Louisville, 66-0, in 1914.

In 1925, the Vols lost to the Commodores 34-7. UT blanked Alabama, 25-0, in 1931.

The Volunteers and Crimson Tide played to a scoreless tie in 1936.

The Vols fell to Alabama, 8-0, in 1942. The Crimson Tide and Tennessee played to another scoreless tie in 1953.

Alabama beat UT, 19-8, in 1964. The Vols notched a 24-0 victory over the Tide in 1970, Tennessee’s first year under the guidance of coach and Alabama product Bill Battle.

Alabama toppled the Vols, 38-19, in 1981. In 1987, the Tide prevailed in the long-running series 41-22.

Tennessee last played on Oct. 17 in 1992 when it lost to Alabama, 17-10.
