KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

Vols Wire is taking a look at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in its program history.

The Volunteers have had an abundance of success on Oct.7. The Big Orange has played 15 times on that date and the Vols are 14-1 in games contested on Oct.7.

Tennessee first played on Oct. 7 in 1905 when it defeated American University, 104-0.

In 1911, the Vols shut out Mooney School 27-0. Tennessee routed Maryville College, 32-6, in 1916. The Vols beat the Scots, 21-0, again in 1922.

In 1933, the Vols knocked off Mississippi State 20-0. In 1939, UT beat College of the South 40-0.

Tennessee and Mississippi State met in Memphis in 1944 with the Big Orange leaving West Tennessee with a 20-7 victory.

The Volunteers beat Duke, 28-7, in 1950.

Tennessee beat Mississippi State, 17-3, in 1960. The Vols toppled Memphis State, 38-7, in 1972.

UT downed Army, 31-13, in 1978. In 1989, the Vols outlasted Georgia 17-14.

Tennessee beat Arkansas, 49-31, in a shootout in 1995. Georgia beat Tennessee, 21-10, in 2000.

The Vols last played on Oct. 7 in 2006 when they notched a 51-33 comeback victory over Georgia.
