Tennessee opened the 1990 season taking on eventual national champion Colorado in the Disneyland Pigskin Classic. The game was played at Anaheim Stadium in Anaheim, California, with 33,485 in attendance to see the No. 8 Vols take on the No. 5 Buffaloes.
After the 31-31 tie to Tennessee, Colorado suffered a 23-22 defeat at Illinois in their third game before winning ten consecutive games over five ranked opponents to win the AP national championship, sharing it with Georgia Tech (Coaches poll). Tennessee finished the 1990 season 9-2-2 and SEC and Sugar Bowl champions.
